WordPress Beginners

wordpress

WordPress is as easy to use as a word processor, so all you have to do is the point-and-click interface to learn how to use it well.  And you won’t even need these WordPress basics for long.  And as you delve deeper into WordPress, you’ll find that it grows and expands with you, so you can learn as much as you want about WordPress.

And if you are new to WordPress, you may find yourself confused or frustrated.  This is why it is so important to define the basics of WordPress from the very beginning.  Are you clear about what WordPress is and how it works?  Otherwise we will talk about it.

  what is wordpress

You must have obviously heard of WordPress.  But do you know what it is and why it is so popular?

WordPress is probably best known for blogging.  At least in its oldest form, that’s where it all started.  But since then it has moved beyond blogging and is now capable of running a wide variety of websites.  In fact, WordPress is essentially a powerful CMS (Content Management System).  The CMS platform allows workgroups or individuals of any level to publish content to your website consistently and easily.  No programming or technical skills are required.

However, the real strength of WordPress lies in its customization and flexibility.  In its early days, WordPress gained popularity not only because of its ease of use, but also because it was open source.  This means users with more technical skills can dive into the WordPress background code and customize it in many different ways.  In addition, a large community of developers has grown around WordPress, creating and publishing all kinds of plugins and extensions, thus improving the performance of WordPress.

For you and me, this means we can use WordPress to power all kinds of different websites, from personal websites to large e-commerce websites, all thanks to its open source philosophy, ease of use, and ease of use.  Thanks for the ease.  Huge community of WordPress developers.

The two big areas that make WordPress so powerful are plugins and themes.  Let’s take a look at each.

      What are WordPress Plugins?

plugin

Quite simply, WordPress plugins are plugins that extend the behavior and capabilities of your website.  That’s why plugins can handle everything from contact forms and photo galleries to integrating your social media feeds to running an online shop or membership website.

If you want to include something specific on your website, you can simply add it through a WordPress plugin.

Some plugins appear on the user interface of your WordPress site where your visitors interact with them.  A contact form is a good example.  In other cases, plugins may simply be used in the background to manage things like site security and data backup.

And amazingly, there are thousands of plugins with new ones being released all the time.  Most of the plugins are free while others are premium or paid.  Or sometimes a plugin will operate on a freemium model where a simplified version of the plugin is available for free, but you need to purchase the full version to unlock more advanced features.

Or, if you can’t find a plugin to do what you want, you can hire someone to create a custom plugin for you.  Or you can create a plugin yourself.  I’ve hired developers in the past to build custom plugins for me and the good thing is that it gives you exactly the functionality you’re looking for, whatever it may be.

So this is the essence of WordPress plugins.  If you can dream about it, there’s probably a plugin that does it.  And now what about the other important aspects of WordPress, themes?

      What are WordPress themes?

Themes are another area of WordPress that you need to know about.  Themes control all the design elements of your website.  So everything from fonts, colors, styles, layouts and more is controlled by your WordPress website theme.

If, like me, you’re into design, you’ll want to learn more about themes and the way they work.

The great thing about themes is that they work like templates – you can simply install a new theme and activate it, and the look of your entire website will change instantly.  And because WordPress is so popular, thousands of themes have been developed and released for you.  Like add-ons, most are free while others are paid.

The best themes allow you to customize them and make them your own.  Hestia is an example of a very powerful and flexible theme that allows you to customize it.  Other themes behave more like frameworks or web builders.  StudioPress Genesis is a great example – it’s one of the most powerful and popular WordPress frameworks out there.

Or, you can dive deeper into the world of WordPress themes and learn how to create your own theme.  And it’s a lot easier than you think.  A good place to start is with a page builder plugin called Elementor.  Elementor uses a very intuitive drag-and-drop visual interface that allows you to quickly create layouts and layouts.

So these are WordPress themes.  And now that you know a little more about WordPress, you are definitely wondering.

      Is WordPress easy for beginners?

One of the best things about WordPress is that it is easy to learn.  Starting WordPress yourself is not difficult.  In fact, you can learn the basics very quickly.  This is one of the reasons why WordPress has become so popular.

Before the advent of WordPress, building a website was quite technical and frustrating.  Only designers and developers with a solid understanding of HTML, CSS and compliance standards can build a website well.

And while we had web design apps like Dreamweaver long before WordPress, they acted more like a word processor.  You’ll choose File > New, and then you’ll have to create your web pages anew each time.

But WordPress has overcome these technical hurdles to a great extent.  Anyone of any skill level, even just basic computer literacy, can use WordPress to build and operate their website.

And since WordPress is a CMS, don’t start over with a blank page.  Instead, start with a completely designed website with your own content and ready for customization.  This makes it easy to get your website online.

And here’s the thing: As a newbie to web design, you can keep it simple and stick to the basics of WordPress.  Use the point-and-click interface to run your website and add new content as needed.  Maybe you want to know about WordPress, and that’s okay!  Or if you prefer, you can always dive deeper into WordPress.  You may choose to inquire about custom theme designs.  Or maybe grab HTML and CSS to hone your WordPress skills, who knows!  The thing is, you can go as far as you want with these things.

In fact, WordPress can serve as a gateway to the wider world of web design and online project execution in many ways.  And as you keep digging into WordPress and web design, they expand and grow with you, taking you wherever you want.

If there is one area of WordPress that is difficult for a beginner to learn, it is WordPress themes and plugins.  These can be difficult to learn because they are not regulated.  This makes it a wild west.  As powerful as themes and plugins are, the documentation can sometimes be vague or even non-existent.

For example, install a new plugin and you can find out how it works.  So there can be trial and error and sometimes it can be frustrating.

But it is not a reflection of WordPress.  This is poorly documented from the plugin or theme developer.

  1. It’s been about a month since I started blogging, and at first I searched for wordpress and thought it was easy, but it wasn’t easy for me and I gave up once. I restarted WordPress and things I didn’t understand before are starting to make sense little by little. When you do repetitive tasks, you can feel the simplicity of WordPress.
